Chapter 19

Emily

I couldn’t accuse Patrick of avoiding me. He saw me nearly every day, checking up on the progress with the new apparel line and the prototypes that my team were furiously putting together. He made a few suggestions here and there, but for the most part, he seemed to have gained a lot more confidence in the changes that I made to his basic designs.

I had to wonder if that had anything to do with him not wanting to criticize me too much—especially not in front of everyone else.

And there were always other people around. That was what made the whole thing so strange. I couldn’t accuse him of avoiding me, but at the same time, I never saw him alone again after we’d had sex in the conference room. Either Jonah was there, or the designers were there, or his secretary was there. Someone was always there babysitting us.

That was probably a good thing. I couldn’t seem to quit thinking about him. I couldn’t seem to quit dreaming about him. I wanted to say that I wouldn’t try anything unprofessional if I saw him alone, but I didn’t know if I had the willpower to hold myself back.

I kept thinking about how Alyssa might be interested in him, and how much of a catch he clearly was for anyone else. I couldn’t help feeling jealous. I wanted him back.

But he was my boss. And I’d broken his heart.

The other challenge with never catching him alone was the fact that I still needed to ask him about New York City and the supposed move to an office there. I couldn’t stop thinking about what Alyssa had said. I wondered how she knew about the move before any of his employees seemed to. This was Alyssa, though. She always seemed to know what the good gossip was, and Patrick’s search for real estate in New York City wouldn’t have gone under the radar.

Why was he moving to NYC, though? And why hadn’t he told me?

It was all so confusing. I tried not to think about it, instead choosing to focus on the prototypes to the exclusion of pretty much everything else.

Except that now, those prototypes were finished.

“I have to admit, I’m impressed,” Jonah said, which was about the highest praise that I could receive. I wasn’t sure exactly what the deal was or what Patrick might have told him, but I’d gotten the distinct feeling that the man either didn’t particularly like me or didn’t like my work. He smiled at me now, though, then turned to Patrick. “We’re going to have our pick of retailers.”

Patrick nodded. “I know,” he said, enthusiasm in his voice. He put an arm around my shoulders and gave me a quick, one-armed hug. “Seriously, Emily, thanks for all your work. This is so much better than I could have expected. I mean, these are just the prototypes, and already they look totally professional and like something you could buy in a store.”

I grinned at him, trying not to blush too hard.
